grow Fujibakama with us!

Let’s grow Fujibakama together!
We are looking for people who are ready to grow Fujibakama with us.

Do you know the little light-purple flowers of Fujibakama? Fujibakama, one of seven autumnal herbs, is said to have grown all over Kyoto.  It appears in The Story of Genji, which tells us it was cherished at that time.  Fujibakama has a lovely smell and it is said that aristocrats in the Heian era used to carry it in a small pouch as a sachet.

Fujibakama is now endangered.  It is very rare to see the pure breed which had been loved from the ancient times because of crossbreeding with other garden plants.  But a rare pure bred Fujibakama was found in Oharano, Saikyo ward, in 1998, and there has been a growing movement to preserve and increase its presence in Kyoto.

With our wish to preserve and increase this rare breed in our area that has a close relationship to Heiankyo and The Story of Genji, we started the “Gosho Fujibakama no Kai.”.

Some similar activities have already started in Oharano and Fukakusa, including KBS Kyoto’s Fujibakama Campaign.  We are making efforts to let more people know about our activity.

Therefore, we’d like to find people who can join us in the “Gosho Fujibakama no Kai.”  There are two ways to support our group.
1) to grow a Fujibakama plant we provide you with at your home
2) to be a financial supporter of our group and we will grow a Fujibakama for you

On October 2nd (Friday) and 3rd (Saturday), we are planning to hold a Fujibakama Exhibition on Teramachi Street between Marutamachi Street and Nijo Street.  The names of supporters will be put on the flower pots.

Let’s grow Fujibakama together!  Please fill out the following application form and send or e-mail it to the office.
